Cottage Life

Is something of its own. Is something to try if you think you might need it. Steeped in swipes and newsfeeds, it might take visits plural to fully enter into its lull and gear down. It is an escape though, when you’ve accepted its terms, that puzzling on the coffee table and following the arc of a distant bird are legitimate pastimes. The folks picked up a humble but homey bungalow about a four-dollar drive away from Halifax (at current fuel prices) in Musquodoboit Harbour, a community settled by American Loyalists and later immigrés from Western Europe. Inside: trinkets, condensed living and a TV with rabbit ears. Outside: near silence. The back lawn eases down then drops to a thin strip of shore along the Petpeswick Inlet. You can stand admiring or set a kayak into the drink to venture around the local islands. Enjoy the sounds of wind pushing water and night skies that save their best colors for the fewest number of eyes.
